Treatment Considerations For Pulmonary Heart Disease
Pulmonary heart disease is a rare form of heart
disease. In fact, a person can acquire it only if he were suffering from
a chronic lung disease. It is hard to pinpoint this heart disease at an
early stage for it appears only after the lung disease has grown worse.
Chest pains can be attributed to the lung disease and all other common
symptoms such as fatigue and cough are usual complains for the lung
disease.
Changes in the lung tissues or emboli in the lungs increases pulmonary
pressure but, unfortunately, decreases the cardiac output. These
abnormal changes, when it becomes chronic, will lead to pulmonary
hypertension. When pulmonary hypertension is uncontrolled there will be
a right heart failure.
Right heart failure in pulmonary heart disease makes it one of the
hardest heart diseases to treat. The reason for this is that when the
right heart fails, the only best option for patients is to undergo a
heart transplant.
There are only a few treatment considerations for pulmonary heart
disease. Firstly, while the heart is being treated, the lungs should be
treated likewise since it is the cause of the heart disease in the first
place. Secondly, heart transplant is best only for younger patients.
Older patients have a smaller chance of surviving a heart transplant.
The best treatments for older patients are long-term with the use of
existing therapy treatments using oxygen, diuretics, and anticoagulants.
Other therapy treatments are available using drugs that were developed
through the years.
A person diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension will have to be placed in
an environment with minimal air pollution. Also, if the patient was an
active smoker, permanently stopping his smoking habit is a must. Lastly,
previous lung disease contracted during childhood can have an effect on
the occurrence of the pulmonary heart disease. |
