The Basics of Congenital Heart Disease
Congenital heart disease can be deadly, but is
misunderstood by many. For a lot of the population, there is no real
difference between heart disease and the distinguishing word of congenital.
However, if you better understand what it is you can look for it and get
help if it strikes someone close to you.
Congenital heart disease is when the heart or a large blood vessel near it
is malformed. It is something you are born with, as opposed to other types
of heart disease that can develop over time. In fact, congenital heart
disease is one of the most common birth defects around, and is usually
diagnosed within a week of birth.
Since before a child is born, their blood circulation is different than
after, it is not a major problem for a fetus. Once a child is born, though,
the disease must be diagnosed and treated.
Treatment of congenital heart disease varies depending on the person. That
is because the disease itself can vary a great deal. The first thing that
has to be done is a proper diagnosis of the disease. Then, in addition to
healthy diet and exercise, the patient must follow strict instructions and
medication. The entire program should be outlined and supervised by a
qualified heart physician. It is certainly never ever advised that someone
with congenital heart disease self medicate in any way.
As you can imagine, this is a disease that one fights from birth until
death. That is perhaps why it is so feared by many. However, the truth is
that with early detection, proper care, and an individual who is willing to
take responsibility for their own health and lifestyle, a patient can live a
productive life. It is all about gathering information, getting the right
care, and learning to properly care for one’s self. In the end, that is how
congenital heart disease is fought.
